It was isolated together with additional carotenes in crystalline form as early as 1831 by Wackenroder. Later, it gave the name to the entire class of these compounds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"noborder alignnone wp-image-452 \" src=\"http:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beta-Carotene-1024x207.jpg\" width=\"551\" height=\"111\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beta-Carotene-1024x207.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beta-Carotene-300x61.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beta-Carotene-768x155.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/beta-Carotene.jpg 1975w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 551px) 100vw, 551px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Different total syntheses of \u03b2-carotene were published independently in 1950 by Karrer &amp; Eugster, Inhoffen and Milas. Just four years later <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> was produced commercially and used as pigment in food and feed. The capacity for the production by industrial synthesis is several hundred tons of <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> per year.<\/p>\n<p>Because of its pro-vitamin A activity <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> is one of the most important carotenoids. The first step in biosynthesis is the cleavage of the central double bond of the <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> molecule which results in two molecules of retinal. This reaction is catalyzed by the enzyme <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> -15,15&#8242;-oxygenase. Afterwards, retinal is reduced to vitamin A (retinol).<\/p>\n<p>The chart below shows the content of <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> in various fresh fruits and vegetables<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> content in mg per 100g edible material<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"noborder alignnone wp-image-310 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/161027_both.jpg\" alt=\"161027_both\" width=\"846\" height=\"258\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/161027_both.jpg 846w, https:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/161027_both-300x91.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.carotenature.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/161027_both-768x234.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 846px) 100vw, 846px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The values indicated can only serve as an approximation since:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> content can vary depending on the variety, the season and the degree of ripening;<\/li>\n<li>the bioavailability of <strong>\u03b2-carotene<\/strong> from fruits and vegetables depends on the method of preparation before ingestion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u03b2-Carotene<\/strong> is one of six individual carotenoids produced industrially by chemical synthesis by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dsm.com\/corporate\/about\/our-company.html\" target=\"_blank\">DSM<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.basf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">BASF AG<\/a> companies.
